HSI's mission, vision, role, and values

Our Mission

We develop and sustain exceptional supportive and affordable housing with integrated social services to advance the health and well-being of New Yorkers who are vulnerable to homelessness, while strengthening the communities they live in.

Our Vision
A world in which everyone has a home and community that assures them safety, a sense of belonging, and access to the resources that promote a healthy and satisfying life.

Our Role
As a leader in developing and sustaining supportive and affordable housing communities in New York City, HSI’s role in this larger vision is to break the cycles of poverty, discrimination, physical and behavioral health challenges, and trauma that leave people vulnerable to homelessness, providing individuals and families with homes and access to services, and contributing to safer, more socially and economically stable communities.

Our Values

Justice: We believe that access to safe, secure, and affordable housing is a basic human right and an essential contribution to a more just and equitable society.

Community-led: We seek out and listen to the voices of the communities we serve, co-creating solutions to meet their needs.

Equity and Inclusion: We work to build communities in which all residents feel included, valued, and respected, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual preference, ability, or socioeconomic status.

Compassion: We believe in treating each other with empathy and respect, recognizing that every person has unique experiences, challenges, gifts, and contributions to their community.

Accountability: We hold ourselves accountable to our tenants, partners, and investors, recognizing our interdependence and shared responsibility in changing lives.
