It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of HSI Trustee Charles Thanhauser.
Charles, 63, died at home, with his family, on June 22, 2015. The son of Joseph Thanhauser, Jr. and Marion Wolfson, Charles grew up in Philadelphia. He earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts & Architecture (1974) from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters Degree in Architecture (1977) from Harvard University. Charles moved to New York City where he founded TEK Architects in 1987. Specializing in non-profit and educational projects, TEK Architects won various awards and was featured in the Museum of Modern Art.
Witty, provocative and insightful, Charles was a driving force in Housing and Services, Inc.'s rebirth. We miss him terribly. Together we will strive to meet the very high expectations he set for us.
Charles is survived by his three sons: Bart, Will, and Graham. HSI extends our deepest condolences to Charles' family.
We came to the good fortune of knowing Charles through TEK's design of the Edwin Gould Residence, a project developed by HSI for youth aging out of foster care, completed in 2006. Post construction, Charles joined HSI's Board of Trustees, bringing his talent and skills to our work ongoing. Charles' impact on HSI's continued growth and success cannot be overstated. His passion for creating smart and beautiful design was equally matched by his commitment to creating the best communities for HSI tenants to live in and our staff to work at. In honor of Charles, HSI is pleased to announce The Thanhauser Employee Education Fund that will help support the continued education and career development of HSI employees. If you would like to support the fund please contact HSI here about how.
